I am a little torn with this review - between 3 ½ and 4 stars.Lady Elyssa Prescott has a limp from a childhood accident and is painfully aware of her `imperfection' thanks to the reaction of `society'. Her siblings are fiercely protective of her and want her to be happy. Her sisters create a correspondence romance, realise it is a mistake and then Elyssa's brother Harrison decides to distract her by inviting someone to charm her for a 2-week party at their country estate.
He calls upon an old school friend with a reputation for the ladies, Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield and offers him a foal from one of his Arabian horses for simply escorting his sister socially - warning him to keep proper distance.
Before the ploy can even begin Brent meets Elyssa out riding and is enthralled by her. She is an outstanding rider and shares his love of horses. His attraction is genuine and he truly sees her wonderful qualities. For the first time in her life, she is made to feel desired and attractive. However, the agreement with her brother hangs in the air above them like a hatchet waiting to fall.
Alongside the development of their story, there is a parallel story of Harrison and Lady Cassandra. They meet again after 4 years, following a terrible scandal and betrayal, only to realise that they were unwilling pawns in a game and so much time has been lost. Real danger now puts all of their lives at stake.
I liked the story and very much liked the 2 main characters, but the secondary plot could have been a story in its own right.
Overall a good read, but not quite up there for a 5 star rating.

Shattered Dreams edition by Laura Landon Romance eBooks Reviews
Brentan Montgomery, Earl of Charfield, has one abiding passion. That is his stable of prize Arabian horses and Harrison Prescott, Marquess of Fellingsdown has just offered a colt from his excellent Arabian stock. But for a price. Brent must escort his sister, Lady Elyssa Prescott, for a two week house party.
Lady Prescott is beautiful, but she has suffered a childhood accident that has left her with a limp. This affliction causes her family to hover over her trying to insure her happiness, thus, the house party. it seems that Lady Elyssa has a secret admirer who is unacceptable, so her brother hatches a plan to deflect Lady Elyssa's attention.
Ms Landon delivers not one, but two great love stories in one book. Harrison Prescott, Marquess of Fellingsdown, meets a love interest, also at this house party. His three brothers have picked guests that may be marriage prospects, also. Unraveling all these love stories is pure pleasure. There is even a suspense thread that winds through this tale. If you want romance in spades, be sure to read this book, or any of Ms. Landon's books.
This was an incredible book. The drama was fantastic, the characters sympathetic and engaging. The setting was fabulous. I was completely swept away. And then there was the fact that aside from being an amazing book, it was a regency as well. A well-written one as far as I am concerned. There wasn't a lot of talk of dresses and such but the author conveyed the period in tone and voice rather than descriptions, although the scenes were well set. I am not an expert of the period, there was no talk of Prinny or any other period name dropping, but the book didn't need it. I just knew somehow and accepted the in-game. I am also terribly easy to please so a high-stickler of historical accuracy may not want to take my word on it. But I somehow think even the most severe critic will have to admit that this is a well-crafted story that is gorgeously written and flawlessly executed. Very very highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
This is a predictable Historical Romance but truly delightful. Besides the angsty romance of Elly and Brent we also get to see Harrison, the Duke of Fellingsdown, rekindle his romance with Cassie. But the main romance goes to Brent who is a known rake and Elly who has a severe limp from a childhood accident. Their initial courtship is sweet, heartwarming and totally romantic until Elly finds out about Brent being hired to pay attention to her. There is violent danger that erupts and causes injury to a main character.
I totally enjoyed reading this novel. It was a sweet escape into a world of the Victorian house party. I turned pages to find out what would become of Elly and Brent and the horrific violence that nearly killed one.
I bought this book thinking it was by Laura London, when it was written by Laura Landon, a different author. I chose it because the ad mentioned Arabian horses and I am a horse lover. Unfortunately, while Laura London knows a great deal about horses, Laura Landon does not. She describes the Arabians in the story as being exceptional large, strong and much more powerful than the other horses owned by the people in the story. At this point in history, Arabians had been imported to England and were being crossed with the racing horses then used by the English. They were certainly beautiful, but neither large nor exceptionally fast. It was their offspring that became the English thoroughbreds. The Arabians were beautiful, but not especially large nor powerful.
A Regency romance is only as good as the research that goes into the story. For me, this story had too many spots where I had trouble believing the storyline.
