I used to have a friend who would say "This hurts like real life" when a book or comic hit on something particularly truthful. That was the highest compliment he could give a book. For me, Fade to Black hurts just like real life. Jeff Grobnagger, our narrator and very reluctant hero, is trapped in that ironic detachment so prevalent in our generation, trying desperately to stay away from relationships of any kind--friendship, dating, random social interaction, you name it. There were times while reading when I cringed because I've heard myself and some of my friends voice the things Grobnagger says. There's a moment near the middle of the book that made my stomach hurt it was so real. All of that said, Fade to Black isn't some long-winded psychological rumination of a chronic sad-sack. It's full of action and Grobnagger's narration is hilarious. There are going to be times while reading this that you find yourself laughing even while he's breaking your heart. That old saying about writers sitting down at their typewriters and bleeding? McBain and Vargus nailed that, but also somehow managed to be funny and keep the pace fast. For a book that takes such a hard look at self-loathing, isolation, and emotional responsibility, Fade to Black sure has a lot of kick-a** fight scenes...and magic...and other cool stuff I can't tell you about without spoiling it. I'm only giving it five stars because I'm not allowed to give it more. I loved Fade to Black, and I can't wait to read the sequel.

Fade to Black Awake in the Dark Book 1 eBook Tim McBain LT Vargus Reviews
I began reading this book under two first impressions. I know that sounds like that isnt feasibly possibly, but I don't care. Point one, it shares a great title with one of my favorite Metallica Jams, and two I heard that with every page I would be chuckling myself into tears. (I heard that second one from another person's review). Now either the person who wrote that review is either super giddy or maybe it takes a lot more to crack me up.
Now that being said this book did make me smile here and there and I had a couple of laughs.
It also took me on a ride I wasn't truly anticipating from the first few turns of the page. And I will concede that I did like where it went.
I do know personally what it means to craft an interesting story, not to throw out a free plug during this review, but I too have written a novel. And the Tide Turns by Timothy Dalton. You should really check it out, and don't forget the review.
Now back to my review of Fade to Black, I don't want my love for my own creation to overshadow this masterpiece.
I give it five stars because it had an interesting plot, character dynamics, and the story "moved". Also, I dug the internal monologues that happened throughtout, it reminds me very much of my second novel I am writing. It's okay I won't go into detail on that just yet.
Anyway, I would recommend this for anyone who does like a little comedic taste in their readings because this one does give enough to satisfy as well as a unique story. Lastly, I do look forward to reading more of what these authors have to offer.
The main character (Jeff) is completely anti-hero, but he may or may not have a special ability. During seizures, he has a lucid reoccurring dream (or is it?) of being harmed by a strange attacker. While members of different occult groups allegedly are interested in his possible astral projection or want to take him out. As a self-loathing individual, he often goes into manic self talk and distances himself from characters that become clear they want his friendship, as well as his help, in finding a missing girl and discovering what the most secretive of the occult followers want. There are laugh out loud moments mixed with heartbreaking torment as Jeff offers a narrative via his thoughts about his approach to life be alone because you deserve to be alone, use sarcasm to deflect uncomfortable situations and by all means - keep emotional attachments with others at bay. Unlike any other story or book I have read in many ways. The narrative can get a bit hyper-verbalized. My only complaint was that there was an abrupt ending, meaning that after investing in the characters and thrilling tempo you don't know how anything ends. A fun mind-twisting book.
Jeff Grobnagger is a 27-year-old slacker who wants nothing more than to be left alone. His problem, though, is that he keeps blacking out at the most inopportune times and having the same dream; he’s strung upside down in an alley and a hooded man keeps killing him—many times in fact.
Jeff meets mustachioed Glenn whose daughter, who was involved with some arcane cult, is missing, and Louise, a PI who is investigating the various cults interested in astral projection among other things. To further complicate matters, Jeff learns that someone is interested in him because of his dreams, and they just might be trying to kill him for real.
Fade to Black is book one in the Awake in the Dark series by Tim McBain and L.T. Vargus. This is a book that defies genre categorization. It has elements of the paranormal—actually, more the para-abnormal—mystery, and macabre humor. The characters are captivating, and the plot doesn’t unfold; rather it folds and refolds in a most byzantine way, leaving you wondering just what the heck is going on. You reach the end, and you’re still not sure what just happened, only that you thoroughly enjoyed it.
Reading Fade to Black I am reminded that there are people who drink with the sole intention of becoming intoxicated. It is full of unexplained shifts and half digested philosophy that entertained me almost against my will. I doubt that I will read any more of the promised series, but it wiled away a long journey and I was thankful.
