THE NEW DEPUTY IN TOWN is book 2 in B.J. Daniels "Whitehorse Montana" series and though technically it could be read as a standalone, I'd highly recommend reading "Secret of Deadman's Coulee" first. There are so many characters as well as a plot device that are carried over from that book, that I just think it will be more enjoyable if they're read in order. Unlike book one however which had a great mystery but under-developed romance, this book had a wonderful blend of both. The story revolves around the new Deputy Sheriff, Nick Rogers, who has his hands full in Old Town Whitehorse with a series of attacks, a murder, and the list goes on. Then he takes one look at Laney Cavanaugh and he knows he's in over his head. Because like the rest of the folks in Whitehorse, Nick is keeping secrets, deadly ones. But as they work together to solve a murder, the bond between he and Laney grows as does the danger. Because someone is only too willing to use Laney to end Nick's life once and for all.

This was definitely an intriguing story and is a wonderful example of what a romantic suspense should be. There are a ton of things going on in this little town, where secrets, deceptions, and lies abound. Even with all the shocking revelations and twists and turns, nothing was ever overdone and I was compelled to keep reading just to see what would happen next. The author did a great job of balancing the mystery and romance too. There's an instant attraction and pull between Laney and Nick, which I found very believable. I thought their romance was really sweet and touching, with just enough passion to keep it interesting. There's one love scene, but it was quick and not overly graphic in my opinion. The ending was full of tension and surprises, and very well executed. Overall this story was never predictable, kept me guessing, and had me constantly on my toes. I'm looking forward to Laney's sister Laci's story next, and to see what else these people of Whitehorse are hiding in their closets =)

Below is a list of all the books in the original "Whitehorse Monana" series (it looks like there might be a few spinoffs - The Corbetts, Winchester Ranch, Chisholm Cattle Company, and her newest - The McGraw Kidnapping) and their reading order, for those who don't already know:

The New Deputy in Town Whitehorse Montana B J Daniels 9780373826018 Books Reviews

Nate is hiding out in a small town in Montana. His former partner, Zac is set to go to trial, and Nate is the key witness to the killing of two officers that Zac has killed. That is if he lives long enough. Things aren't quite as quiet as he thought they'd be in this small ghost town either. The sheriff is on Vacation in Florida, and Nate has his has full with all sorts of crimes, including a murder that happened at a bridle shower.

Laney is vacationing for her yearly visit, to see her grandparents in the town where her and her sister were raised. Things are a little more exciting this time around though, because her cousin and her sister are suspects in a murder case. Laney is trying to help Nate figure out what's going on, but just about the time they start to figure things out all hell breaks loose and they find themselves fighting for their own lives.

Would I recommend this book? Yes I certainly would, but be prepared because it's one heck of a thrilling ride.
I found the characters could have been a little more fleshed out, but they still shown through in all the right ways. If the bedroom scenes had been as graphic as the action scenes, it would have pulled 5 stars out of me. I loved all the subplots and mysteries unfolding along with the sexual tension between the two main characters. I especially liked when the deputy had interactions with the townsfolk and the solving of the missing chickens. Daniels has an easy style of writing that doesn't leave the reader behind. An entertaining read for me.
The new deputy in town, Nick Rogers is efficient but at the same time a bit too elusive about his personal information. Running from his dangerous past which is right at his heels, he thought a small town was the answer to all his problems and Whitehorse seemed the perfect place to lay low but a small town is not always as boring and stilted as it looks. Whitehorse is right in the middle of mysterious attacks on men
every Saturday night, suspicious deaths, thefts that are unaccounted for and dark secrets that rule the place. There is gossip and then there is Laney Cavanaugh who is much too alluring and distracting to Rick's plan of survival.

A perfect small town setting with believable characters, this is yet another engaging entertainer from B.J. Daniels. I loved the whole package and was thoroughly entertained. Although a part of a series, "The New Deputy in Town" can be read as a standalone book which is what I did. The book gripped me from the start and held me at the edge of my seat till the last page. I could not get up until I had finished the book.

There were some glitches also like Nick's fear of water was suddenly introduced and not developed properly. Also the closure to the Evan's family didn't sit well with me and left me wanting more. The mystery of Laney's mother's disappearance is mentioned numerous times but not developed. Maybe it is carried forward to the next books in the series and so I will have to read and learn all about it.

All in all, a value for money book which entertained me and made me fall in love with it. A book that can be read any number of times, I give "The New Deputy in Town" a 4 out of 5 and recommend that you read the book as well as the whole series. I definitely will! )
