I have to say that for a bad guy, Stryker's not all bad. He's not all good, either, but he has a code and he sticks to it. I don't love the guy or anything (he's kind of the one I love to hate) but just like all the other major players in the Dark-Hunter world, he was shaped by his past and by events beyond his control.I'm just going to pause a moment to throw in that Apollo is pretty much an ass. Much like many of the major gods. It pains me to think that if he dies, the world dies. Some days, there's just no justice.
So. Stryker. Zephyra. Yeah, those two have a history. It's tangled. Well, mostly it was tangled by Apollo's assishness and Stryker's youth. Eleven thousand years later and Stryker's not the trembling boy he was and he's willing to fight for the things he wants.
Zephyra *might* hold a bit of a grudge against Stryker. Not that I blame her, but she's carrying around a whole lot of bitterness and their reunion is less than civil. Oh, and she's a little bloodthirsty. Not just toward Stryker, either. The things she does to Jared aren't cool. (Oh, man. Jared. *pets him*) Yeah, Zephyra has some issues to work out. As most of Sherrilyn Kenyon's characters do. (and that's why we love them!)
Big movement in the overall arc. BIG movement. Stryker's crew figure out something monumental and Nick's destiny begins to unfold. The world, it is getting bigger. And I love it.

And bake you a batch of hero cookies? Zephyra is the long lost first wife of Stryker in service to Artemis. Needless to say when she is sent to kill him, fireworks ensue. This book is more "bleh" when compared to the others in the series. Which I think has more to do with the past history of Stryker being a villain and that makes it hard to really like him as a hero. HOWEVER, this book gives MAJOR insight on the Malachi (Nick Gautier) and Sephiroth (Jared) conflict. Stryker also learns how to convert Daimons from the soul-suckers they've been cursed to be for eleven thousand years. They can now walk in daylight which brings new dangers and challenges to those who hunt them. Nick also learns some surprising info about Acheron. The major difference in this book is that those who are mortal enemies come together to fight for the common good and protection of mankind rather than it being the usual former heroes who make up the Dark-Hunter cavalry.
I didn't like Zephrya at all. While Stryker evokes an ounce of sympathy, I have absolutely none for her. However, I think that was the point. Why give the bad guy a love interest to 'redeem' him if he's just going to stay the bad guy?
Unlike other reviewers, I got the irony of Stryker, Ash & Nick being forced to work together. Even though Stryker hates humans & couldn't care less if they all died, he does care for his own kind and doesn't want War to destroy them.
The fact that Ash is a chothonian makes sense but there should have been more lead-up to that reveal. Nick coming into his Malichai powers was something I've been waiting to read about. (For more about Nick read the YA series The Chronicles of Nick. It ties into the dark hunter series during No Mercy, you just have to pay attention.)
I felt this book was an effort to reveal a lot of new information about many characters rather than staying focused on the romance between the main couple. But since Stryker & Zephrya are the bad guys, they don't deserve much sympathy.
The main reason I read this book was for the rest of the information it revealed.
I cried and laugh and it’s was like the story was a biography instead of fantasy. This book, Acheron and Styxx book had me crying for those babies I wanted to jump in the book and rescue them from their families. Even after I finished the books they felt so real. Amazing writing and story telling. Can’t wait for next book to be published. Thank you Sherrilyn Kenyon!
As shared in other reviews, as an ultra sensitive empathic intuitive, having taught psychic/intuitive development and the Tarot, I am very much drawn to paranormal and urban fantasy books, not to live in a fantasy world, but to evolve my thinking that there is more going on in life, than what always meets the eyes to see.My husband works in a health food store and they have a book drop off. He happen to see book 18 "bad moon rising" and brought it home for me...I read the book, felt like something was there in terms of depth and storyline and I proceeded to get all of the books. Some are quick reads and some keep you at the edge of your seat. There are changes beginning to take place in our lives, and reading a paranormal or urban fantasy book, assists us in opening our minds to the idea that there is something more going on in life...so for those most interested in paranormal and urban fantasy, this is a nice series to add to your collection.
