Simon Armitage is a polarizing poet because he is both performative and popular, yet formal and darkly comic. Indeed, the performative elements of his poetry feel akin to American slam poetry, but he is far too English and far too formal for that to be an easy fit. In many ways, the current Oxford Professor of Poetry as of 2015, succeeding the late Geoffrey Hill, is a completely different kind of poetic institution than Hill. Armitage is a poet that is easily taught whereas Hill is not.

One of Simon Armitage's gifts is also something that many find frustrating about him. His ability to pick up on pop culture conceits and premises and weave them into his poetry. In the title poem, "Kid," you are immediately hit with an invocation to "Batman, Big Shot...". While he is often compared to other dour semi-comic British poets like Ted Hughes and Philip Larkin, Armitage's love of the contemporary and postmodern mixed with his near perfect forms remind me more of modern Robert Browning.

This first collection is a good a start as any into Simon Armitage, who seems to be far more popular in both academic and non-academic circles in the UK than the US.
This is competent poetry, written in a competent style. Ideas driven, that makes it interesting on one level. But as an exploration of language and feeling, it did not excite me. The tone is too downbeat for one thing, and I did not find it a necessary read.
