Hollowshore is a dark, contemporary story of survival set against an ancient landscape that bore witness to centuries of violence and struggle. Young, beautiful and secretly pregnant Agnes, known to all as Annis, runs away from a damaging life in care and is rescued by her uncle Corin. He takes her to Hollowshore, a remote marshland, to live in a run-down caravan by the pub where he works. There, Annis befriends three women. Sarah the landlady of The Heron, Melissa a famous artist who lives in the town and her neighbour Lilith - wealthy, anorexic and desperate.
The unstable Lilith harbours a terrible secret - she is unable to have children. A chance meeting with Annis prompts her to lie and fake her own pregnancy. A sick game of cat and mouse with the vulnerable young girl begins and soon spirals dangerously out of control as the teenager’s pregnancy progresses.
No one knows the lengths Lilith will go to to get what she wants. And what she really wants is a baby.
Hollowshore is an intense coming of age thriller that tightly draws together the lives of four very different women increasingly entangled in a maelstrom of longing, desperation and impending loss. An unsentimental examination female relationships in the face of abuse, tragedy, addiction and finally madness, it is a brutally honest insight into the best and worst of women’s desires and motivations. It is a story of hope, a testament to the resilience and spiritual inner strength that some are born with, determining who will survive, and who will not.
